Tileyard London in Conversation with: Amapola

go back

With new music set for release this July, we caught up with London-based neo-soul band Amapola to find out more!

For those who don’t know you, can you introduce yourselves?

We’re Amapola, two guys with specs and two guys with beards who play neo-soul from London.

What’s the story behind the name of the band?

We put all of our names into Google Translate and Poppy’s was best (Amapola is Poppy in Filipino). Our only other contender was Palikpik… Keep an eye out for Poppy on our next single!

How did you meet?

Our hometown music scene and distinct lack of anything to do in the countryside.

Who are your biggest influences?

Jordan Rakei, Robert Glasper, Hiatus Kayote and Taylor McFerrin are huge influences for us.

What does your songwriting process look like?

It really depends on the song to be honest. We always used to jam in Sander’s parent’s living room when we started off, but more recently Alex has kicked things off with a featured artist and the rest of us work out our parts later.

What was the idea behind the amalgamation of video clips used in the music video for your track ‘Remedies’? Did you create this yourselves?

We used all the posh video assets for Giving It Up! So when it came to Remedies we had to turn to the mobile phone archives…

How did your live session for the track ‘Giving It Up’ at The Cold Stores Studios come about?

A lucky google search revealed this amazing studio was just down the road from our parents’ houses. It turns out we had connections with Ben, the studio owner, through our hometown music scene as well. The space was perfect to film a live session for our first release, so we were very lucky. It also happens to be Jeff Beck’s local practice room of choice which was cool.

We’ve heard you’re releasing some new music in July. What can we expect?

Finally some music after a long hiatus! Definitely a departure with what people have heard before. For the first single, we’re featuring an incredibly talented artist and rapper, Peigh, who Alex met at Tileyard through a couple of sessions for TBI media.

Imagine you were playing the middle slot in the gig of your dreams next week, who would you be supporting and who would be opening for you? Where would you be playing?

Tricky question and definitely hard to land on names we all agree on, but at the end of the day we’re happy with anyone who’s fun to hang out with after the show!

Go-to playlist at the moment?

‘grungey gals’ (Fin)

‘I don’t really do playlists, I do albums!’ (Toby)

‘Two Thousand and Eighteen’ (Alex)

A playlist I’m working on called ‘music that isn’t cool atm but should be’ (Sander)

What’s in the pipeline for the remainder of 2020?

Lots of new material, a couple of old favourites, some really great artists that we’ve been excited to work with, recording for our second EP as soon as we’ve released the first, and sadly, but likely, lack of gigging thanks to Coronavirus.

Where’s the best place to stay up to date with what you guys are up to?

Definitely Instagram because we’re a little too lazy with Facebook. Oh, and we did one tweet once.

Amapola Apple Music
