Tileyard resident Will Page, author of Pivot and the former Chief Economist of Spotify, sat down with the BBC ‘The One Show’ team to discuss the British acts that dominated the music charts in 2022.
The top ten songs of last year were, for the first time in a long time, all British acts. As you go down the chart, the British presence remains strong – 16 of the top 20 and almost 60 percent of the top 100. British acts have never had it so good at home, but there’s a twist. The top ten in Germany were all German, and the top ten in Italy were all Italian – this domestic dominance of the charts is happening across Europe.
We welcomed BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show presenter Richie Anderson to TYX to explore why this is happening. We’ve got more music fans, with over 20m Brits now using Spotify and more music with over 100,000 songs being uploaded every single day – the same quantity of music that was released in the calendar year of 1989. Richies and the BBC One Show Team were keen to learn more about the algorithm and how it changes the way hits are created.
