We caught up with Tileyard Education, Senior Wellness Manager, Suzanna Storey, to discuss some key tips for looking after your mental health and wellness during Mental Health Awareness week.
If you could summarise the work you do in a sentence?
I help creatives connect with their authentic self, tap into their vulnerability which is the birthplace of creativity, and overcome obstacles and blockages to their creative expression. When we connect with our authentic self we realise that we can become an endless well of creativity.
Tell us about why you have become a champion of mental wellness?
We are human beings, not human doings. Mental wellness is key to the longevity and success of our lives. I’ve become a champion of mental wellness because I think it’s key to living whole and happy lives!
What are your top 5 tips for looking after your mental health?
- Boundaries. Know what your limits are, and learn how to say no.
- Work from rest, not for rest. Rest is key to our mental health. This includes sleep, but also a rest from overstimulation – i.e time off from social media and technology devices.
- Drink enough water. Dehydration can affect your mental health, so make sure your stay hydrated, caffeinated/alcoholic drinks can dehydrate you as well so try to avoid drinking too much of those.
- Write a Journal. Writing your thoughts and nurturing a relationship with yourself is key to maintaining good mental wellness.
- Get moving. Whether it’s a walk around the block or to the shops, yoga, or team sport. Getting yourself moving can work wonders for your mental health, exercising in nature also helps to calm down your nervous system so if you can get around some green, then even better!
