Tiggi Hawke has released her single, Giants, along with a stunning music video. We spoke to Tiggi about the story and concept behind the song.
Where did the initial idea / spark of inspiration come from for your song, Giants?
For me, Giants is a song about self-freedom and realisation, allowing yourself to stand up and be who it is you want to be. I feel like it reflects my internal changes through lockdown and that it’s a celebration of self. Of course I still have all the parts of me from before, for better or worse, but I’m learning to embrace them more, so Giants is, at least to me, almost a personal/internal travel journal.
How did you take it from the initial concept to working with producers to reach the finished version of the song? What was your process of working with producers?
Giants was actually written on a camp with the incredible Mali-Koa and Jaded and from the demo on that day it was already pretty much where I was imagining it. Jaded were amazing, and we made a few changes and touch ups, like re-recording the vocals and stacking some more chants. It was a super enjoyable process, it felt like everyone was on the same page and it came together scarily easily!
We have to talk about the video. How did that come about, and the location and effects are quite incredible!
Thank you! We had the most insane team for the video, Oli Kane and Sam Hampson came up with such a unique concept so we built it from there, guided by Dan Sanders, and I am so proud of how it all turned out. I’ve never used VFX before but it’s definitely been on my wish list for a long time and I finally got to see how it all works and how it can really transform visuals. In terms of location, Oli, Sam and Dan are Lake District experts and they completely guided me, we all went up there to shoot and the landscape is next level. We were ended up shooting one scene at night on the solstice which felt very otherworldly and special.
“Giants” takes your sound into a slightly new direction. Is this something that has evolved over time naturally?
Definitely, I was really determined to make this release as authentic sonically to me as possible and that has grown from the last couple of singles, which hinted to this direction but never really committed. I’m so excited to be moving more in this direction and I’m looking forward to seeing what might come after.
The music was written and recorded at Tileyard. Most of your team and collaborators are at Tileyard too – that must make an artist’s life a lot easier, right?
It’s true, the re-recording was done in Tileyard and most of my wonderful team are there too so it makes it easy to chat with them face to face and talk things through (that might be a negative for them though!). I would say while Tileyard contains a lot of my team and the people I work with, and it’s been amazing to meet people in the complex and get start new collaborations as well.
What can we expect to see and hear from you after the release of “Giants”?
The music video has just been released and I’m over the moon to be able to put it out into the world and show the incredible work that everyone’s done! I also have a remix coming out in the next few weeks which I really love, and I think it shows Giants in a completely different light. After that, well, there’s plenty where that came from, the next single is lined up and ready to go so I won’t have to wait too long before I can share more music again!
