Top 5: Tips to Boost Your Confidence

go back

Welcome to our brand new ‘Top 5’ blog series. Every week we will be revealing 5 pearls of wisdom from a member of the Tileyard London community. From creative industry tips, to top places in London to eat and drink, there’s a whole host of knowledge at Tileyard that you definitely don’t want to miss.

How many times have you thought to yourself that if you had more confidence, you would have performed better or been more successful? At least once, right? This week we spoke to Wizdom Layne, the king of public speaking and Managing Director of Tileyard Impact. Wiz gave us his top 5 tips to help tackle those nerves and build up your confidence.

1.Practice

This might be an obvious one but practice is essential. In order to feel confident you need to be prepared and know what you’re doing. I regularly give speeches in front or large groups of people and I always repeat the speech over and over again in my head before talking in front of others.

2. Be willing to fail

This might sound a bit negative but confidence comes from doing something over and over again. It’s important to be aware that things don’t always go as planned and every situation is different. You’re not born with confidence, confidence is learned. If you’re not willing to fail you will never get to the stage in which you’re completely confident.

3. When you fail, fail forward

Confidence is a learning curve. If something doesn’t go to plan, the key is to figure out what happened, learn from that situation and work out how you could do things differently to avoid the same issue next time.

4. Overcome your fear

Feeling nervous is completely natural. Fear is our body’s natural response to doing something new or different. The trick is you have to be prepared to overcome that fear. The majority of the time we imagine the worst possible outcome of a situation but in reality things tend to go pretty well! It’s a bit like a barking dog behind a door, terrifying at first but when you open the door, it’s only a chihuahua. It’s not that bad!

5. Do your best

We’re not robots and things don’t always go smoothly. Just ensure you feel prepared and give it your best shot! Make the most out of every opportunity you have.
